The Friulane
The origins of the Friulane date back to before the 19th century in the Friuli countryside, when “scarpèt” were used as party shoes and by brides on their wedding day. Handmade with often makeshift and recycled materials, the sole was usually constructed from bicycle tires, the padding from jute bags and the uppers from scraps of fabric. In their simplicity, they aroused the attention of the wealthy, becoming perfect silent companions to sneak from one room to another in the court.
The story of the “scarpèt” lives on to this day, intertwining with yours and however you’d like to use it.

The coffa or “cuffinu” is typical of the Sicilian peasant tradition. It was originally used as a feed bag for farm animals, filled with straw and tied to the neck of a donkey or horse. The coffa is more than a bag
The coffa was, and still is, truly artisanal, created with utility from poor but durable materials. Is typically made with the soft and very resistant part of Sicilian dwarf palm leaves.
Between the 1950s and 1960s, movie stars sported coffa straw baskets on the beaches of Saint Tropez, and the trend for woven grass bags and wicker baskets never stopped. The fashion icon Jane Birkin brought this style to the streets in the Sixties, accessorizing her look for a night out with a cuffa.
